about the second deadliest school shooting in u.s. history. we'll have their first hand accounts. plus, here comes another one. more rain winding up off the coast, just about to make landful. >> i do think people waited a little bit and now they're just ready to buy, buy, buy. >> which is just what retailers want you to do. good evening. i'm bryan. ann notarangelo has the night off. we're going to begin by looking at the hi-def doppler. still picking up scattered showers. another system is winding up offshore. up to another three feet of snow above 7,000 feet in the sierra. we'll have the complete forecast this just a few minutes. meantime, in marin county, people are keeping a close watch on the creek. during the rains, it came within inches of flood stage.

elisa is live there. >> reporter: we're taking a look at the level of the creek. pretty low, only about four feet. it floods at 13. that's what happened back in 2005. here's some video from back then, just to remind people why folks who live in this area always prepare whenever there is a storm on the horizon. the creek overflowed, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage. the rain here today has been on and off but will return overnight. the creek runs right through downtown where many business owners still have their sandbags stacked from the last storm that happened earlier this month. this store is closing for a couple days around christmas so they're making sure to prepare the restaurant for whatever mother nature may bring. >> we have a board that we set up along here. and we put plastic and the sandbags. we built them up. we hope that it doesn't flood.

>> reporter: some people who live here told me their basements flooded during the last storm, so they're also stacking sandbags in case the weather takes a turn for the worse. there are floodgates throughout downtown. tonight, though, it's really the calm before the storm. ice not raining yet but you -- it's not raining yet but you can see sandbags stacked. and a reminder of what happened back in 2005. this plaque on the door, this is how high water got in downtown back there. reporting live. it was another day of weather-related delays and cancellations at bay area airports. 18 flights were cancelled earlier today. delays were as long as three and a half hours. tonight, horizon flights are running about 20, 30 minutes

late. one traveler was worried he might miss christmas with his family. >> i was going to miss my connecting flight. and now i just -- i've been here for like four hours trying to figure out another way to get back to ohio to see my family. >> you can just hear the fatigue in that guy's voice. no flights were cancelled at oakland and tonight there are no delays there. well, the rain down below translates to snow up top. here's what it looked like earlier on i-80. there was a major backup because of an accident on the freeway. we can see up to eight feet of new snow above 7,000 feet. by the storm the storm door closes on wednesday. and you can track the storm any time with our hi-def doppler radar tracker, at cbssf.com. the rain certainly didn't

stop some from doing their last- minute shopping for christmas. that's why today is being called super saturday. >> reporter: the bells are ringing. the clock is ticking. and last-minute shoppers are hitting the stores. >> this is a big shopping weekend, right before christmas. >> reporter: retail tracking firm shopper track forecasts that today and tomorrow will be among the biggest shopping days of the year, even more so than a normal saturday before christmas. since the hold falls on a tuesday, people are using the long weekend for holiday preps. >> i do think people waited a little bit and now they're just ready to buy, buy, buy. >> reporter: the company visa released a survey saying nearly three quarters of consumers still had holiday shopping to do. >> why did you wait till the last minute? >> because i'm a man. simple. >> i really have no excuse,

so... >> reporter: and those out this weekend have an extra challenge. the on again, off again rain. >> i went yesterday and it was pouring rain. >> we watched the weather last night, and we saw that little gap coming, so we thought we'd take a chance and come out in the morning. >> reporter: and it depends on your perspective. >> a little bit of rain feels good. >> reporter: most of these people don't have the time to worry about mother nature. they're keeping their eyes on the prize. >> i'm sticking to my budget. there's a game plan, man. you can't come out here not knowing what you're doing. you to strategize. >> reporter: and enjoy the madness for all its worth. >> just mingling into the crowds. that's all. >> you like it? >> i love it. i don't like it. i love it! >> reporter: in san francisco, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> some shoppers are thinking twice before buying certain video games for kids this holiday season in light of the newtown, connecticut, shooting. at one store, a couple of shoppers told us they're staying away from violent video

games because there's too much violence in their community as it is. instead, they're focusing on educating kids about the games they play. >> parents and just the community, we really gotta tell our kids, that you know, it's just video games. you don't do this in real life, you know what i'm saying? i mean, don't take the video games too seriously. that's not real life. >> in a press conference yesterday, the nra said violent movies and video games, not guns, are largely to blame for mass shootings. the final three funerals were held today for victims of the connecticut school massacre. seven-year-old josephine gay liked peanut butter and the color purple. anna marquez green was carried to the church where a thousand friends gathered. and family and friends of six- year-old emily parker wore her favorite color, pink, to her funeral. newtown's police chief and captain were among the first responders at sandy hook elementary school following the shooting rampage.

the two of them sat down with elaine to describe what they say that day. >> we needed to break into the school to get in, because the back doors are secured. >> how did you get it open? >> broke out the window. >> reporter: it was quiet and the halls were empty. he searched sandy hook elementary school room by room. >> the rooms were locked. that means that the teachers had done their job, locked their doors and hid their children there danger. so we went around the building to the front of the building. >> tell me about that. >> there was a very tragic, you know, observation on all parts, because then you could see the carnage that was present. >> when you saw what was in that classroom, what went through your mind? >> i was devastated, absolutely devastated. i had no words. i felt a little bit of anger towards the person who had done this. >> did you think there was

anyone there to save? >> no. >> as a first responder, how do you deal with that? >> well, you feel a sense of guilt in that you weren't there quick enough to do that. but i also know that our response stopped that threat where he was, and he could not proceed any further. >> reporter: outside the building, captain rios was overseeing the evacuation. >> it was miraculous. i kept seeing children come out of the building and i kept wanting more to come out and more. i walked in and it was horrific. the crime scene itself. and to see the adults, and the children that were deceased in the classrooms, it -- it was very hard obviously to

comprehend what had happened. >> reporter: a year ago, chief keho read to a sandy hook kindergarten class. all 20 children killed were first graders. >> i may have read to some of these students that may have perished or not and that kind of hit me hard. i know as part of that reading, they got to ask a lot of questions. and some of those questions were about their safety and why policemen come to a school. and i know that maybe we in some way -- we -- owe them. >> you feel guilty? >> i feel some sense of guilt, deep down inside. i just believe that our job was to keep, you know, kids safe. >> how would you respond to suggestions that having armed police officers in schools could prevent shootings? >> i don't think we want to arm police officers in every school. >> so you don't think that's the answer?

>> no. >> reporter: the newtown police department already has three officers assigned to the district. but the chief says their primary role is community outreach. some of holidays biggest celebrities are putting their faces and feelings into public service announcements to end gun violence. >> as a human being... >> for the children of sandy hook, demand a plan. no more lists of names. it's not too soon. >> it's too late. >> now is the time. >> before we all know someone who loves someone on that list. no more lists. >> the demand a plan campaign came just hours of the nra news conference suggesting that armed guards in every american school is the answer. it's part of a larger campaign of mayors against illegal guns. gun-control advocates staged a protest in san francisco today in memory of the victims of the sandy hook massacre. the event in san francisco was

organized by the brady campaign to prevent gun violence. participants carried signs with the names of the victims. there were also 26 pairs of shoes to represent them. protesters asked for stricter gun-control legislation in memory of those who decide. >> i'm hopeful that these 26 people did not die in vain. i am hopeful that these 20 children, their lives have to mean something, and this is what they're going to mean. >> the group spokesperson, who was herself a victim of violence, says public opinion seems to be turning against the nra's views. and still ahead, the video showing true heroism by an officer in boston. the lengths he goes to save a woman in desperate need. and we've got another one coming on, after we've added quite a bit to the rain buckets in the bay area.

union workers for the rale' grocery chain have ratified their new labor contract. the two-year deal includes and benefit concessions for t 7,000 workers, inclu union workers for the raley's grocery chain have ratified their contract. the contract includes wage and benefits. the union went on strike before thanksgiving. it was the first strike in the chain's 77-year history. berkeley police have a new cell phone warning tonight. they say thieves are approaching people and asking to borrow their phone to make an emergency call to a sick relative.

when people hand over the phone, the thief takes off. police advise never lending a phone or even taking it out to give somebody the time. there's been a rash of thefts using that approach. and there could be another tax hike on the horizon for california smokers. papers have been filed for a 2014 ballot initiative to increase the cigarette tax by another $1 a pack. that would raise about $800 million for the university of california system. among the supporters, lieutenant governor newsome. after nearly two months since superstorm sandy devastated the east coast, thousands of people are still trying to rebuild. days before christmas, volunteers delivered a little hope to one family. erika is in new york with that story. >> reporter: lanny doesn't have a job this christmas. superstorm sandy destroyed the restaurant where she and her three daughters worked. it also wiped out the first floor of their home in breezy

point, new york. >> do you just want to be back in your home, even if it's not going to be the same? >> reporter: volunteers are trying to make that happen. days before christmas, seven of them put up insulation, an expensive job that this single mother says she just doesn't have money for right now. >> it's a relief. it's like a burden off your shoulders. fabulous. they're such kind, thoughtful people. >> reporter: the family won't be back in their house this christmas. in fact, they don't expect the work to be complete here until the spring. but they say knowing others volunteered their time to make their christmas a little brighter is the best gift they could have received. they aren't the only ones getting help from operation blessing. in october, sandy caused billions in damage and devastated this waterfront community. >> this has been an area that has been so devastatingly affected by the storm.

there is so much need. >> reporter: laura kelly and her family came from connecticut to help rebuild. >> if i was ever in this position, i would hope people would come and do the same for me. i figure it's the least i can do. >> reporter: but they say it's not a little deed. it's given them hope and a sign the christmas spirit is still alive. cbs news, breezy point, new york. also in breezy point, a couple determined to rebuild their lives... they grew up in breezy point. it was always their plan to make a home there, but sandy put that plan on hold. >> it's a little bit of hope, to see we're going to pull through this. we're gonna do it one day at a time. we're going to rebuild. >> more than 100 homes burned to the ground in the aftermath of superstorm sandy. many of the other 2800 homes were destroyed by floodwaters, including the home that tracy

and rich shared together. we get the tiniest taste of that today. a san francisco gas station is shut down after its roof collapsed on top of a car this afternoon, in the aftermath of our own storm. this is the 76 gas station at 17th. nobody was hurt, but a building inspector is checking things out there. winds will be a factor for us in the bay area, as this new storm is winding up offshore. we're going to look for gusts up to 70 miles an hour. other locations, south to 45, travel with caution. that will be in effect beginning late tonight and through tomorrow at about 1:00 in the afternoon. the hi-def doppler is picking up scattered showers in the aftermath of the storm we had today, especially coming in just a bit north of oakland. a few showers in san rafael. all of this is just residual activity.

but for us, rainfall totals, not bad. napa picked up about an inch and a half. san francisco, 78/100 of an inch. san jose, just 47/100. inch and a half at concord. oakland has 53. san francisco is at 54. santa rosa, 43 degrees. let's have a look at what we expect in the headlines. some showers tomorrow. then more rain. a brand-new dose comes in and it will spread rain south tomorrow. river levels have to be watched, only because the ground is primed. it doesn't have a lot of room to soak more stuff up. the good news is we get a little bit of a break and that will give things a chance to drain. the napa river, just be aware of what's happening tomorrow, because the rivers could rise more. there's also winter storm warnings. wind gusts at the sierra, up to 55 miles an hour. so it's really going to be coming in. the hi-def doppler is showing

us that line of showers moving from novato to south of point reyes. and over the san andreas fault. there's some showers down in the south bay too, just south of san jose, headed toward morgan hill. tomorrow, this is all going to change. we've got low pressure that is hanging over, south of washington state, and that's bringing in this slug of moisture, just south of the low. that's got more moisture content than the system we had today. we could get more rain tomorrow than we had today. the forecast, and the numbers, not a big deal here. they're in the mid 50's tomorrow. the source of this is warm, so it's not going to be terribly chilly. i do have bad news for christmas. right now, this is just what it looks like. looks like we're going to have a cloudy day. looks like christmas is going to be wet. in the extended forecast, expect rain tomorrow. thunderstorms, not out of the question by any means.

we get a break on christmas eve. partly cloudy skies. but then wet on tuesday. wednesday, a few showers. then we'll clear it out so that thursday, friday, saturday look to be no more than just partly cloudy skies. tonight, tomorrow, expect wet. there was an impressive act of heroism caught on camera in boston. a police officer jumped into frigid harbors to rescue a woman yelling for help. he didn't hesitate to dive in. somebody tossed a life ring that he brought to the woman. they both made it to a floating dock. not clear how she got into the water in the first place. it's been a bay area tradition for decades. the holiday party that put smiles on hundreds of faces today. why organizers say this year was such a big success.
